Daniel Steidle, Pacifica’s Chief of Police, issued the following statement last week on the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Floyd was killed during his arrest. A video showed an officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes.
The police officer was subsequently arrested for third degree murder and manslaughter. Floyd’s death sparked hundreds of protests about policing disparity in America, and in some cases rioting and looting.
“As your Police Chief and on behalf of the fine members of the Pacifica Police Department, I wish to express our outrage at the reprehensible act that led to the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd in Minneapolis. As a department and as a profession, we join our fellow law enforcement professionals across America as we unite to speak out against the criminal actions of this officer. We are saddened by this event and offer our thoughts to the family of Mr. Floyd, and to the community of Minneapolis. As peace officers, we are entrusted by our community to make decisions each day in the protection of life and property. At the Pacifica Police Department, our training and policies are in adherence with modern police practices designed to assure enforcement of the law in a fair and equitable manner, while placing life and safety at the forefront of our mission. We commit to perform at a level every day that solidifies trust from our community, and we will never quietly stand by when the very few in our profession choose to act in a criminal manner. We are proud to serve this great community of Pacifica and will continue to do so with the highest level of ethics and professionalism.”
