After three years of navel gazing over an ordnance to manage RVs illegally parked on Pacifica streets, the issue finally came down to this pithy statement from Councilmember Mike O’Neill:
“I’d like to put a fork in this and call it a night.”
We all do, Waffle Mike. Believe me, we all do.
You can read Jane Northrop’s stellar reporting on the topic on Page 1. I have a few more observations.
- If it were not for O’Neill’s fence-sitting on this issue, this whole deal could have been settled last year. In the end, Mike came down on the side of the angels and recognized that a screwy city-managed system of allowing homeless RV dwellers to live in the parking lots of neighborhood churches or in the driveways of willing residents was fraught with too many perils to proceed.
- The task force that the city set up to study the issue deliberated entirely in secret. As I told the group at their first meeting, if they continued to meet in secret, whatever “solutions” they came up with would be rejected. That came to pass. I’m not a prophet, I’ve just been around the block a few times. This was a fatal error.
- The Pacifica Resource Center took some PR hits over its involvement in the so-called “safe parking” scheme. This outfit is literally a godsend to Pacifica. If you have a problem with the work of the PRC, then you will have a problem with me.
Postscript: Councilmember O’Neil, in another one of his painful fence-sitting soliloquies, said the Pacifica Tribune didn’t help the situation with it’s “yellow journalism” on the topic. Jesus, Mike, anytime you wanted to correct our reporting or challenge our opinion, the door was open. Since you did neither, we suggest you stop pointing fingers at others and see a doctor about that hemorrhoidal splinter.
TIME TO GO BACK TO THE OFFICE
After months of working from home, here’s what it’s going to be like when the boss says be at work and in your cubicle by 9 a.m.
ONE MORE THING
— Being 20 in the 70s was more fun than being 70 in the 20s.
— Jim Carry will play Joe Biden when Saturday Night live resumes in October. The rumor is that the inspiration for the casting took place right after a viewing of “Dumb & Dumber.”
— I said to my wife, “let’s go out for dinner tonight.” So she came back with the usual “I have nothing to wear.” I said “just wear what you wore last time we went out, you looked beautifu.l” So there we were in the local steak house, me in my jeans and t-shirt, and her in her wedding dress.
— J.F.K, Charles de Gaulle, Indira Gandhi. Why are so many world leaders named after airports?
— This sign was supposed to say “Mask Up Utah.” My Mexican friends know otherwise.
I’ll let myself out and look forward to seeing you next week. In the meanwhile, channel your inner 60s-self and always question authority. Stay safe. Mask up.
